It was in 1990 that Jim Hopkins made the leap from a retail banking career to the
role of a trainer, then instructional designer, performance consultant, Training
Manager, Director and Chief Learning Officer. Yet at the heart of him is the role of
trainer. The skill set that defines the bridge from one person knowing to another
person learning.
Early in his learning career a manager and lifelong mentor sat him down and
inquired about the many questions he always had about this role he had taken on
in the training development. She concluded that he not only wanted to know how
to do his job well, but why he was doing things a certain way. This single
individual noticed that Jim was passionate about the responsibilities that come
with the learning function, and guided him as he acquired the skills to develop the
adult learner.
At one point he was known as the Heinz 57 trainer, because he could train so
many different topics, and was a master facilitator who engaged his audiences
with humor. For a time he expressed himself with the creation of training
materials with what one manager described as a natural talent. Yet his calling
seemed to land in the area of performance consulting. The ability to evaluate
situations and prescribe solutions that improved performance. Jim feels that
training solutions should only apply if warranted and if they will make a difference.
While managing the training function, Jim orchestrated large scale initiatives that always focused on the business
objectives, and with the precision of a conductor allowed teams of training professionals to express their full capabilities.
A devotee of Servant Leadership, Jim insists that his role is always to remove barriers to success, and allow people to
become empowered.
For the past several years Jim has developed with talented colleagues, two Human Resource and Training Consulting
Firms that begin with solid needs identification, and the application of appropriate performance solutions.

While leadership development remains one of Jim’s primary missions, it was before the writing of this book even began
that it occurred to him that his entire life seemed devoted to fixing things. From his early days in banking where he moved
from one branch to another to bring it back to health, to the purpose of training development and even his love of home
repairs, Jim likes to analyze a problem, and fix the performance. He prides himself on identifying issues early, and to be
as proactive as humanly possible.
Thus was born by destiny the concepts of The Training Physical. Now instead of waiting until your training department is
on life support, you can begin a more proactive approach to the health of your company’s learning environment. Now is
the time to make an appointment with Jim and get your Training Physical.
